Starting an online shop is free! Well, almost.
Online shops equaled expensive and complicated technology for a long time. But a few years back, the situation changed. It's now easier than ever to start a shop online, and it doesn't have to cost a penny.
If you don't need to connect your online shop to a business system or other logistical solutions, then there are plenty of alternatives for you when starting a shop. Some of them are: Tictail, Shopify, Squarespace and Wix. A common characteristic of these platforms, is that you don't need any technical knowledge, and you can be up and running in no time. Some of them charge you per month, some by sale, and some of them are completely free.
We recently started our own online shop, and we used Tictail. It's a Swedish service, with the goal of making online shops as easy to run as a blogg. The basic functions are free, and you only pay for the special packages, if you wish to install them. The reason we chose Tictail is simply because we liked it, and because the simplicity and adaptability appealed to us.
On the other hand, if you have an existing online shop with working sales channels and logistical solutions, then Tictail and similar platforms might not be the right choice for you. In this case, you need a solution that can be tied to your business systems and other parts of your operation. However, this does not necessarily mean that you're facing a million dollar investment and two mile long contacts. There are plenty of clever solutions for your needs as well, but we'll talk about those in a different article.
Prioritize the experience
Since the technology isn't a part of the equation anymore, what you're offering in terms of products and experience becomes crucial, and can determine wether your online shop becomes a success or a waste of time.
So if you're considering to start an online shop, think about what's unique about your brand, and how you can create an experience that make your costumers want to come back – and tell others about it.
Launched and ready?
Once your shop is ready and filled with both products and content, it's very easy to loose your working pace. You take a breather, relax and wait for the orders to start rolling in. Sadly, it's not that simple. Starting a shop is the easy part, the real work is in what comes next.
The democratization of digital services makes it easy to sell things online, both for you and for others, which makes the competition for the costumers attention very hard. This is why you need a deliberate strategy and a good digital activation concept, as well as ideas about how you can push trough all the noice.
